About the Event
For over fifty years, Judy Blume's classic and groundbreaking novel Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret. has impacted generations with its timeless coming of age story, insightful humor, and candid exploration of life's biggest questions. In Lionsgate's big-screen adaptation, 11-year-old Margaret (Abby Ryder Fortson) is uprooted from her life in New York City for the suburbs of New Jersey, going through the messy and tumultuous throes of puberty with new friends in a new school. She relies on her mother, Barbara (Rachel McAdams), who is also struggling to adjust to life outside the big city, and her adoring grandmother, Sylvia (Kathy Bates), who isn't happy they moved away and likes to remind them every chance she gets.
Peter Travers ABC News: "Hollywood does gloriously right by Judy Blume’s 1970 bestseller about a pre-teen girl (a stellar Abby Ryder Fortson) in a tug-of-war with puberty and religion. Costars McAdams and Bates exemplify Blume’s refreshing candor. Call it totally irresistible."
Adam Graham Detroit News: "Fremon Craig is aiming for hugs, and "Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret." is a warm embrace to audiences of all ages. Hug it back."
Lindsay Bahr Associated Press: "Movies like these barely exist anymore, and certainly not in theaters. Tween girls would do well to seek “Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret” out. It has all the makings of a classic for the next generation."
Devan Coggan Entertainment Weekly: "The film version is an utter delight, a loving adaptation that's both true to the book and endearingly fresh."
