** Workshop & Fat Tuesday Party 2/13 6pm. Gather to enjoy Carnival music from around the world and celebrate Mardi Gras with friends and family. Song and percussion workshop from 6pm. Party with friends and family and music until pau. Changed to 6pm *flier is incorrect* 6pm is correct. Come learn songs, rhythms, body percussion, drum technique and dance movements from the northeast of Brazil! Maracatu is a powerful music and dance tradition with deep roots of resistance, liberation and celebration. Hamakua resident, Derek Wright, has spent over two decades studying, performing and teaching maracatu, and is passionate about sharing this empowering music.
All levels welcome! Instruments provided. Feel free to bring your own bass drums, snare drums, bells, and/or shakers to use or share. $10-$20 sliding scale. No one turned away for lack of funds.
