About the Event

The story of Koolau as told through the  writings of Piilani, his wife.  Set in 1893 Kauai, Kalalau Valley.   Koolau and his son have contracted Leprosy and have been decreed to be  sent to Kalapapa, the leprosy colony on Molokai.  Koolau and Piilani  resist and are tracked into Kalalau Valley by the territorial military.   Perhaps 70% of this film is in Hawaiian Language with english  subtitles.  The acting, starring Jason Scott Lee, is uniformly excellent  and the production values, being in Cinemascope with 4K (rather than  the more common 2K) image resolution make this a first rate viewing  experience as well as poignant episode of Hawaiian history.  Much of  this was shot on the Big Island, and the director, David Cunningham,  lives in Kona.
